Hermes Black Veau Togo Birkin 35 Bag Gold Hardware

Highly coveted and always in unwavering demand, the Hermes Birkin is the height of sophistication. Ever since the serendipitous plane ride where style icon Jane Birkin inspired the chief executive of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas, to create the legendary bag, the Birkin has represented the pinnacle of femininity and functionality.

Hermès artisans train for a minimum of five years before they’re allowed to create a Birkin on their own, honing traditional techniques, consistency and the utmost skill. A single artisan creates a Birkin — by hand — from beginning to end with it taking a minimum of 18 hours to create one bag. Craftsmen practice leatherworking techniques that date back to the Middle Ages using tools like awls, needles and pinces-à-coudre, large wooden grips traditionally used for saddle-making. Artisans must also master the saddle stitch, a method in which an artisan pulls two needles through a hole in opposite directions. Once a bag has been stitched, the craftsman polishes the seams with beeswax until it reaches perfection.

Each Birkin is marked with a code that denotes the year it was created, the workshop it originated from and the artisan who made it. That way, if the bag is ever in need of repair, it can be sent back to Hermès, where the bag’s respective artisan will mend it. All of the minute details, the hours of painstaking work and the years of training that go into a Birkin prove why it remains one of the most coveted luxury items in the world.

Due to demand, prices have shown snagging a Birkin is a better investment than stocks or gold. But at the end of the day, it really all comes down to quality. Because of its fine materials and hand-crafted nature, a Birkin is an heirloom piece that can be passed down from generation to generation. It’s a classic piece that you can keep in the family or, of course, consign, since it will continue to retain its resale value. To own a Birkin is to acknowledge the importance of craftsmanship in a fast fashion world. Buying the iconic bag validates the hours of toil and years of training that artisans devote to their work. And we couldn’t think of a better way to honor them then with this timeless Birkin 35 bag in Noir Black.

Crafted from one of the most sought after leather types, Togo. Named after the theme from the year of its creation: an African country, this leather is the result of an intensive drumming process that brings out its natural features  This process softens the skin and brings a generous grain to the surface. It first appeared in Hermes collections in 1997 and has a matte appearance which is soft to the touch and becomes beautifully supple over time.
